Iverson joins the Puget Sound Healthcare Alliance

 February 21, 2008 (Seattle, WA)

The Puget Sound Health Alliance is a regional partnership involving employers, physicians, hospitals, patients, health plans, and others working together to improve quality and efficiency while reducing the rate of health care cost increases across King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish and Thurston Counties.

Alliance participants agree to use evidence to identify and measure quality health care, then produce publicly-available reports designed to help improve health care decision-making. Reports measuring the quality of care provided in the Puget Sound region, along with useful information and tools, can be helpful in health care decisions, including identifying effective care, choosing or designing health benefit plans, deciding which doctor to see, knowing what questions to ask to get the best quality, and understanding what we each can do to improve our own health.

Thrombosis, Warfarin Dosing, Tamoxifen Response, Factor II, Factor V and MTHFR Assays Validated

January 13, 2007 ( Seattle , WA )

Iverson Genetic Diagnostics has completed the first round of validation that will allow our products to be utilized by a medical provider. These tests will provide personalized information to patients via their clinician by direct analysis of their DNA. The Thrombosis Panel will allow a patient to determine their predisposition to forming blood clots that could cause heart attack and/or stroke. In regards to patients with a higher risk for developing pulmonary embolisms the Warfarin Dosing Panel will assist in the prediction of the optimal Warfarin (Coumadin) dose. Tamoxifen is the world's largest selling orally administered estrogen receptor modulator, which is used in the treatment of breast cancer. The Tamoxifen Response Panel will provide an analysis of the genetic variants involved with the metabolism and effectiveness of this medication. Factor II is a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade that strengthens blood clots. Factor V acts as an assembly site for the binding of Factor II which is important to prevent excess thrombosis. The MTHFR assay detects key variants in the metabolism of homocysteine which has been related to coronary artery disease, stroke, recurrent pregnancy loss, and genetic inherited thrombophilia.

Science Magazine announces "Human Genetic Variation" as the Breakthrough of the Year

December 21, 2007 (Washington, DC)

Bolstered by recent discoveries in the field of genomics, Science Magazine recently reported "Human Genetic Variation" as its Breakthrough of the Year.

Excerpt:
New technologies that are slashing the costs of sequencing and genome analyses will make possible the simultaneous genome-wide search for SNPs and other DNA alterations in individuals. Already, the unexpected variation within one individual's published genome has revealed that we have yet to fully comprehend the degree to which our DNA differs from one person to the next. Such structural and genetic variety is truly the spice of our individuality."

Welcome to the Age of Genomics. Nov 07 issue of Wired Magazine devoted to the advent of retail genomics

November 17, 2007 ( San Francisco , CA)

Wired Magazine recently devoted a cover story to genetics and the future of medicine.

Excerpt:
The advent of retail genomics will make a once-rare experience commonplace. Simply by spitting into a vial, customers of these companies will become early adopters of personalized medicine. We will not live according to what has happened to us (that knee injury from high school or that 20 pounds we've gained since college) nor according to what happens to most Americans (the one-in-three chance men have of getting cancer, or women have of dying from heart disease, or anyone has for obesity). We will live according to what our own specific genetic risks predispose us toward."

June 18, 2007 ( New York , NY )

Forbes Magazine recently devoted a cover story to molecular diagnostics.

Excerpt:

Soon all of us will be able to find out what ticking time bombs lie hidden inside our DNA if we really want to know. This was one of the central promises when scientists decoded the human genome seven years ago--and then a lot of nothing happened. The big obstacle was the high cost of gene decoding; scientists had run through $3 billion mapping the first human genome."

Biology's Big Bang: Unravelling the secrets of RNA. June 16-22th, 2007 issue of The Economist Magazine devoted to the future of medicine

June 16, 2007 ( London , UK )

The Economist Magazine recently devoted a cover story to the future of medicine.

Excerpt:

NATURE is full of surprises. When atoms were first proved to exist (and that was a mere century ago), they were thought to be made only of electrons and protons. That explained a lot, but it did not quite square with other observations. Then, in 1932, James Chadwick discovered the neutron. Suddenly everything made sense--so much sense that it took only another 13 years to build an atomic bomb.

It is probably no exaggeration to say that biology is now undergoing itsneutron moment." For more than half a century the fundamental story of living things has been a tale of the interplay between genes, in the form of DNA, and proteins, which the genes encode and which do the donkey work of keeping living organisms living. The past couple of years, however, have seen the rise and rise of a third type of molecule, called RNA."

Iverson Headquarters established at The Institute for Systems Biology Q2 2007

June 1, 2007 (Seattle, WA)

Iverson Genetic Diagnostics, Inc. is pleased to announce the establishment of its worldwide headquarters at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle , WA . The Institute for Systems Biology was co-founded in 2000 by Alan Aderem, Ruedi Aebersold, and Leroy Hood. In just five years it has grown to more than 170 staff members, including 11 faculty members and their laboratory groups. This pioneering approach to the study of biological systems takes place in the institute's 65,000-square-foot facility in Seattle .

Building a new kind of research institute -- one that can tackle the multi-disciplinary challenges of systems biology requires a strategy that itself integrates many sciences including biology, chemistry, physics, computation, mathematics and medicine. Because the field of systems biology requires the seamless integration of these disciplines, ISB has developed a philosophy, an environment, and an administrative structure that transcends traditional organizational and disciplinary barriers. Scientists collaborate across their specialties to leverage knowledge and expertise with others at the Institute and in academia and industry.
